A picture of the inside of a microdermabrasion machine.Your skin is exposed to toxins, the sun and other environmental elements on a daily basis. On top of that your skin develops around three to four layers of dead skin cells monthly. With these external and natural elements combined your skin can end up dull, sun damaged and clogged. A great way to combat these effects is though microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-chemical way to remove dead skin cells, aid in the production of new collagen and increase cell turn-over rate, all while assisting the process of creating new skin. This is the perfect way to leave the skin with a more even tone and give it an overall healthier look.

The best analogy to describe the act of microdermabrasion is sandblasting a house. You sandblast a house when the paint starts looking dull to buff it off. Microdermabrasion is a similar concept. Depending on the machine, fine crystals are used to buff and polish the skin. Most machines also use a suction tool to deliver crystals to the targeted area while loosening dead skin cells and vacuuming them up. Microdermabrasion is ideal for acne, oily skin, fine lines, wrinkles, dark/age spots and clogged or enlarged pores.

Depending on the level of skill of the aesthetician you go to, microdermabrasion has close to no downtime. But be wary since when it is not done correctly there can be tearing or cause even more scarring to the skin. As with any procedure you must trust and know that your aesthetician has the proper experience and knowledge to perform the treatment correctly, all while paying attention to hygiene as well. With that being said, microdermabrasion has a lot of benefits for any and every skin type, even some of the most sensitive skin conditions. For example microderm has been used to help calm down the redness caused by rosacea. Although it is more commonly used to help slow down oil production for those with oily skin, it also has benefits for those with dry skin. The procedure removes stubborn dead skin cells from the surface of the skin to aid products to penetrate deep into the skin.

The best candidates for microdermabrasion are those with fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, or acneic and oily skin. It is most beneficial for these skin types to receive a microdermabrasion procedure once a month or every other month according to skin type and concerns. Here at Lea Advanced Skincare we have a fine crystal machine and a diamond tip, as well as a sapphire dermabrasion which is great for more delicate skin types! Of the three, our fine crystal microdermabrasion is by far our most popular procedure because of our expertise and technique. We know how to manipulate the machine to work best for each of our client’s skin concerns. Unlike most aestheticians, we tailor every aspect of our facials based on the needs and concerns of the person lying in our bed! Stay tuned! In future blog articles we will go into more detail about our other types of microdermabrasions: sapphire and diamond.
